For Families
The Old Chapel is not ideal for families with young children. The property has a pond in the garden which presents a safety concern. There's no outdoor play equipment or child-specific facilities. A highchair is available for mealtimes. The cottage works better for older children who can appreciate the peaceful countryside setting and walks. The nearby World of Beatrix Potter attraction is 6 miles away.
For Couples
The Old Chapel is perfect for couples wanting a romantic Lake District retreat. The king-size bedroom features a roll-top bath and walk-in wardrobe. Cosy up by the wood burning stove in the lounge with countryside views. The enclosed garden offers a private patio space. Comfortable sofas and peaceful surroundings create an ideal setting. The Sun Inn pub is a 10-minute walk for meals together.
Pet Friendly
The Old Chapel does not accept pets. The property operates a strict no pets policy for all bookings. This makes the cottage unsuitable for guests wanting to bring dogs or other animals. The enclosed garden and peaceful rural location would otherwise be ideal for pets. Guests needing pet-friendly accommodation in the Lake District should look for alternative properties that welcome animals.

The Old Chapel Reviews

We had a very comfortable stay in this warm and cosy cottage. The beds were so very comfy, better than mine at home! Loved having the log burner for a cosy glow whilst eating in the kitchendiner. Cottage very well placed for sightseeing on either side of the Lake.

Such a wonderful cottage. This was the 2nd time there and hoping to stay again in 2026. The pond was removed due to complaints. I hope the Newts were taken to a safe place. Highly recommend this holiday cottage.
Lovely cottage, very clean and well equipped, comfy beds. Ideally positioned in lakes. Good access, great parking for 2 big cars. Great heating for this time of year and some good views. Nice meal at the sun inn, very friendly. Can't fault it. Pretty secret woodland garden.

Very nicely appointed holiday accommodation with good facilities attractively laid out. Comfy beds and easy chairs. Well equipped kitchendining. Quiet location but well placed for exploring local Lakeland region. We enjoyed a restful break here, with everything we needed.

Unsafe Property & Zero Urgent Support Truly Unacceptable. Our family booked this property for three nights, but left after the second night due to serious safety concerns. On two separate occasions, we returned to find not only the doors unlocked, but wide open. First time 09082025I had personally and carefully locked both doors before leaving. When we returned, the kitchen doors were wide open. We stayed that night only because we barricaded the doors and had one adult sleep upstairs and one downstairs with the children. I tried to rationalise it as perhaps cleaners arriving early by mistake, intending to ask about it on Monday this was late Saturday night into Sunday. Second time Sunday 10082025 We again left for the day, locked the doors, and had multiple family members witness the locks being checked. On our return, the other door was not just unlocked it was open. The locks work perfectly, so someone was unlocking and opening the property while we were out. We dont know why. Nothing appeared stolen, but the sense of violation, alarm, and fear for our safety was overwhelming. We immediately packed and left. We called the emergency number immediately we advised we were vacating the property they confirmed the cleaners had not attended and they would call back with information. No further support or offer of alternative accommodation. i followed up the next day Monday 11th 2025, urging them to change the locks to protect future guests. I was informed the owner would be contacted and I would have a call back. no call came. Tuesday 12th Aug 25 I once again called and told it was passed on for investigation. this escalation came 4 hours after my second call nearly 2 days after initially reporting this alarming incident. Wednesday 13th Aug 25 Still no contact from Sykes Cottages or their sister company they had passed the issue too Lakelovers In addition to this, we later noticed that PAT testing on the propertys electrical items had expired, which is a basic safety requirement and another sign of poor property management. We originally chose not to post a review straight away, in order to avoid alarming and worrying other holidaymakers. However, given the lack of action or urgency from the letting agents, it is abundantly clear this matter is not being addressed, and future guests need to be aware of these safety risks. Other minor issues Upstairs shower poor downstairs was good. Garden untidy and needs care. Flag uneven lifting. Fridge froze our food. These were minor inconveniences we wouldnt have complained about. Positives The beds were comfortable and the property looked as shown in the photos. Unfortunately, we never got to use the bath due to our early, safetydriven departure. Bottom line We feel shaken, let down, and honestly scared. This property is not safe, and the letting agents showed no urgency or care for guest safety.
Lovely comfortable cottage, very peaceful & excellent for a quiet break. A good position to stay for visiting Windermere & surrounding area. The local pub, the Sun, was good for a drink & occasional meal. The only downside as others have mentioned is the state of the garden, patio & cleanliness of some of the outside furniture.
Cottage was lovely, situation ideal and the only negative was the outside seating space. The pond was full of algae and the steps up to the seating area had loose slate flags as did the patio which in my opinion was rather dangerous so the only alternative was to sit on the drive which was not ideal.

It was so beautiful, surroundings are so peaceful and the garden is just a perfect place to relax

Very nice property Much better than the photos It would have been nice to stay longer
The cottage was spotless with all essentials that you could ever need. Beds were very comfortable as were the settee's. One of the best cottages that I have stayed in. Thank you for making this holiday a most enjoyable week. Regards Ann

We had a lovely stay the only thing I would suggest is that the pond is cleaned and garden area tidied up to make a nicer outside space.
A beautiful holiday home ! Had everything you could have wanted ! Very clean , tranquil and an ideal place for couples to relax.

Nice little cottage, we enjoyed our stay

Great cottage but oven & hob are not good. Hob very difficult to use and slow to heat up. Oven gets too hot and burns everything.
Lovely cottage in a quiet country lane. The pub is barely 10 mins walk and does excellent food. Kendal, windamere etc only 1015mins drive away. Facilities in the cottage were great, rooms v comfy and everywhere spotless. Would definitely stay again. Possibly leave a few more essentials in a basket next time? Coffee etc, just a suggestion as no shop in walking distance. Thanks again.
No place to store our dry goods. The cupboards were full of kitchen utensils which would not usually be used on a short stay holiday. Otherwise it was a lovely holiday.
The cottage was lovely and in a very quiet peaceful location which was what we wanted. Nevertheless, the likes of Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside all within easy reach. My wife was most appreciative of the large walk in wardrobe which she made a great effort to fill with even more walking attire from the local retailers! All in all a restful few days and we will no doubt return in due course. Many thanks David and Alison
We arrived to a very clean cottage together with the lovely touch of a decorated Christmas Tree in the lounge. The cottage was very comfortable and in a great location. It was warm and cosy and we enjoyed spending new year with our friends in the Old Chapel. The only negative but nothing that would put us off returning would be to think about replacing the upstairs electric shower with a power shower as the pressure was very low. We would definitely not hesitate to book again.
Great stay in a lovely property. Quite remote & unfortunately the only local pub was shut all week but a good base generally for exploring the lakes
The property was stunning and the inside warm and welcoming. It was perfect for a weekend away and a base camp to visit Kendal and Windermere. A great place for ourselves and our daughter, who felt at home instantly and slept with the peace and quiet of the countryside. Thanks so much for making the Old Chapel so lovely!!!

Not a very comfortable cottage grossly overpriced

Fabulous cottage in a great location. The beds and bedding are so comfortable. The shower is amazing and feels like having a massage. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. The local pub even has a plant based menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful cottage, great location in a quiet area, Everything was super clean and everything we needed was provided including washing up liquid, toilet roll etc. Plenty of towels, Highly recommend

What a lovely cottage. Immaculately clean, comfortable. We had clear instructions on getting there, easily found the keys. We really enjoyed our stay. It was so nice to go back there and relax after a day of adventures.
As ever the old chapel is an excellent place to stay in the Lake District. It was nice to see new carpets and settees.

This is our third time in this property and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage is always clean and welcoming and has everything you need. The location is great for access to Bowness and Windermere and great walks and bike rides. Property has been well maintained and updated to a good standard. Off road parking for two cars is brilliant. Would definitely recommend.
We enjoyed our stay at The Old Chapel. Lots of interesting places to visit in the area. We did a couple of local walks from the cottage trying to avoid the main road. Second Bedroom ensuite very cramped and the sink plug did not work so sink would not hold water. Great idea having a website with all the instruction manuals for the appliances however I think other information could be added including local information like nearest shops, doctors, hospital, takeaways, places to visit as we did not find this information in the cottage, most owners seem to provide this. The Sun Inn pub is within easy walking distance, they were friendly and we enjoyed a delicious Sunday lunch. We only found out on the last day that the TV had a Amazon Video account setup, this would have been useful to have known at the beginning of our stay Again something that could easily be added to the httpswww.lakeschapel.co.uk website. Overall we were impressed with the cottage and the area. We would like to return again sometime.
Perfect location. lovely home, perfect for a getaway but to still feel homely. cant wait to come again, definitely going to be the first place I chose to book and recommend to everyone. Just loved it!
Radiator in upstairs bedroom not working looked to have been turned off Fridge ... Radiator in upstairs bedroom not working looked to have been turned off Fridge had a broken shelf that looked to have been fixed badly We love the house and have been back 6 times now but the furniture is looking rather weary Cleanliness is always an issue but will return as we like the place and the local pub Loved the added Netflix and Amazon Chanel this year
Lovely stay at the Old Chapel. Very clean, well equipped and comfortable, the lounge is especially cosy. The off road parking on the large driveway was very convenient. Good communication regarding check in and out. Have booked through Lakelovers many times previously and always found them to be helpful, clear and professional, with quality properties. The only gripe was the cutlery drawer will not open without first opening the cabinet door to the washing machine next to it, as the cabinet sticks out too far so the drawer bangs into it. So everytime you need cutlery you have to first open the washing machine cabinet door. Would be helpful to get this fixed or the door removed. But a minor detail on an otherwise lovely stay!
On arriving cottage unlocked . . lots of dead flies and live ones still flying around. We have stayed 5 times as we do love the situ of this cottage
Lovely accommodation in a great location. Perfect for 1 or 2 couples
We had an issue with wasps inside the house. I found 4 wasp nests in the buildings walls. Reported to Sykes, nests destroyed within 24 hours, no more wasps after 48 hours.
Great cottage, enjoyed our stay. Lovely area to explore.
A great cottage, but expect a fight over who gets the good bedroom and ensuite. Very well equipped, large fridge, half freezer, dishwasher and washerdrier with plenty of kitchen and dining ware that was notably of higher quality and condition than any other holiday let weve stayed in. And the food at the local pub a fiveminute walk away is terrific. The only letdown was the level of cleaning which could have been better, particularly given the current situation.
The chapel was lovely, really nice area for exploring the lake district! The set back for us was the kitchendining area. In the description before you book, it comes across like the wood burning fire and the ability to have a sit down dinner with the comfort of a warm glow in the background is something promised. Unfortunately there was 0 wood there, it later came to my attention that you have to provide your own wood. This wasn't stated in any information given, also the lighting in that room is an awful clinical bright white, giving it no ambience. We ended up eating most our meals upstairs, which I have to say is a lovely room with a great homely feel and fantastic view. For 3.5 days we were only given less than 2 toilet rolls which obviously didn't last which was also annoying. Overall we had a wonderful time in the lakes but felt we were very overcharged for what was given. Than you
