Low Skelgill Reviews

Great setting in beautiful countryside, but remote. Spacious, but the kitchen was very small. We felt that the fridge was inadequate for selfcatering in such a remote area. The heating didn't warm the place until you were ready to go out each morning and was not really adequate in the evening. For just the 2 of us, for over 70 a night in off season, we felt it was not good value.
Low Skelgill is a beautiful property it is spacious, very comfortable and peaceful. The host is wonderful extremely helpful and pleasant. We were very happy to be off the beaten track and in such a beautiful setting. We will certainly visit again. Many thanks.

We have stayed at Low Skelgill four times now. We find it homely and comfortable and provides everything we need. Its in a beautiful place and is perfect for dogs while taking care not to disturb the sheep which come close to the house. This time the sheep weren't there so our Labrador, Oliver, was able to run free. Sue, the owner has always been very welcoming and ready to meet our needs.
Thierry
Very beautiful, secluded location with a beautiful view of the lake but easily accessible by car. Very spacious and comfortable apartment. The carpet throughout gives a good impression of comfort. On arrival, the apartment was very clean, the owner was available and pleasant. The beds are a little too short for people taller than 1.80 meters and the coil mattresses need to be changed because they are too noisy. A washing machine would be a plus. We are overall very satisfied with our rental.
Old dated property but OK not to easy to find very narrow lanes. Steps to climb to reach apartment and Steps 3 to go down to bathroom older people want to know this.
Fantastic views, nice comfy beds and plenty room. Tranquil peaceful setting.
Fantastic position with lovely views. As you can see in the photos the property is rather dated but has everything we needed. Theres a new three piece suite. To access the flat there are 8 quite steep steps but theres a sturdy handrail. The private road is single track but only steep at parts. In the week we were there we didnt meet another vehicle once. It wasnt a problem at all as other reviews may suggest. When there are sheep in the field theres one gate that has to be opened and closed. The owner is lovely and very responsive. The kettle stopped working and was replaced within hours. There was external decorating that had gone on longer than expected so scaffolding was still up. The owner immediately offered us a partial refund. We will definitely want to book this property the next time we go to the Lake District.

Very nice location. Away from the crown. we wanted peaceful and nice view. Walking distance to Ambleside. Susan was very helpful and friendly over the phone. I would definitely recommend this place. Exactly what we were looking for. Thank you.
Fabulous base for walking. Isolated and exciting position with beautiful views of Windermere. Kitchen and bathroom could do with updating a little, but it didn't take away anything from our enjoyment, staying over the New Year with a dog.
Jonathan
Although the owner was helpful in trying to work out an issue, their relative living at the property had a very aggressive manner and spoiled the stay. Would not recommend.
The property was in an idyllic rural setting, with lovely views across Lake Windermere. The accommodation was very comfortable, spacious and clean, and in a quiet and peaceful location. We enjoyed the walk to Ambleside direct from the house along a well defined path through the woods.
From start to finish the holiday was excellent. The cottage was the perfect place to be based and to kick back and relax. The view of Lake Windermere and area is breathtaking. There is absolutely no negative I can say about the cottage and I would strongly recommend staying here.
Lovely location very spacious apartment bathroom and kitchen needs a little updating lovely views
Thomas
Once found the property was comfy, clean and had most things you would expect just needed a whisk. The dcor was tired but more than OK when just stopping a week. The view was first class.
This was our second family holiday here and as last year, we had a lovely stay in the beautiful, peaceful surroundings.
Belinda
Lovely apartment spacious and very homely If anything to say . Kitchen bin is broke, a larger 4 slice toaster would be useful as the existing one does not completely toast a average slice of bread. Thankyou for a lovely relaxing stay. Wishing you a Happy 2023
We had a lovely stay! The rooms and beds were cozy and very comfortable. The views of Lake Windemere from the dining room table were fantastic, and the location was close enough to Ambleside without the bustle or noise. It was also quite fun to watch the sheep and the wee lambs running about at breakfast time. It was a perfect vacation home.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Low Skelghyll. The views are wonderful, the location peaceful and relaxing and the apartment is comfortable and spacious. We would definitely like to visit again.
Pamela
Thankyou ,we had a lovely stay at Liw Skelgill
Elaine
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, Susan was lovely and very helpful.
Andrew
The property is in a fabulous location, roomy and everything one needs whilst visiting the Lake District National Park. The proprietor was friendly and unobtrusive. We shall definitely stay there again,
It's our second stay at Low Skelgill, a very comfortable apartment with the most amazing view and situation. The host, Sue, is always helpful and pleasant. The best part is being able to walk out onto the fells without touching a road, and the view again of course.
Eleanor
The views from the house are breathtaking. The isolated position of the house means it is quiet and relaxing. Spacious and cosy flat, easy to find, wonderful location.
Suzanne
We had read previous reviews suggesting access to the account. Modation is difficult, and we thought those were off putting. Access is a narrow lane, and the turn o to it needs to be taken carefully, but it is a tarmac road with a good surface all the way. Views form the property are stunning, and the owner was very helpful.
Spacious comfortable apartment with a great view down Windermere and access to footpaths to Troutbeck and Ambleside. Beware of the narrow, winding, steep in places access lane with few passing places not for the nervous!! We were very pleased not to meet another car every time we drove along it during our week's holiday there. Also beware of the steep steps outside to access the door into the apartment. On the plus side being halfway up the mountain it is quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the Lakeland visitors.
I really loved the apartment and would recommend it to all my friends. These are the pluses the apartment is spacious and comfortable with a fantastic view. It is well equipped. It is quiet and peaceful and has good wifi. It is also a short drive to Ambleside or Windermere for shops, bars and restaurants and other attractions. We went to Kendal for a supermarket shop and didn't find it to be too far. The description of it being in the heart of a village is misleading. Troutbeck is a huge sprawl of 'village' and in fact the house is very peaceful and located at the end of a private road. Access might be off putting for some very narrow, steep and winding roads where you have to make frequent stops and potentially reverse to allow others to pass by. You need to be a confident driver in a normal sized vehicle although we feel that this is true of the whole area. The kitchen is reasonably well equipped, but if you are a keen cook, you might need to bring some of your own stuff. We took our own big nonstick all purpose fryingone pot pan. We also took our own sharp knife and a coffee pot. We also took our own XBox device so our teenage son could continue to enjoy endless gaming and contact with his friends back home. But through this we were able to access our Netflix account. The living room was devine stunning views from the windows and comfy sofa and armchairs for us all to relax and watch movies. I loved this place and am missing it already !
A beautiful location overlooking Windermere and the valley from the apartment it's possible to walk out from the apartment to fells and woodland. Troutbeck Village has a small cafe and a great pub. The accommodation itself is spacious and comfortable though not luxurious in terms of its facilities. But the views are stunningly beautiful, all the luxury you need.
This gen has truly amazing views, good walks, and Sue, our host, was very attentive in her response to one small issue and ensured our stay was a very pleasant and confortable one. We would certainly return and reccomend Low Skelgill to our friends. Thank you Sue
Deborah
Overall it was good, although the road leading up to it should not be taken lightly! The one problem we had was the heating. I was told it would come on at set times. It didn't and on 2 occasions not at all. It appears to be controlled in the apartment below where a family are living and l believe they must have changed it. It was definitely a minus point!
Everything brilliant, only thing we found unusual the kitchen didnt have a cooker hood.
Claudia
We only had a short trip to the Lake District, but we loved our apartment and would definitely stay there again. It was ideal for us, being close to Amble and Windermere and dog friendly! It had fantastic views over the lake from the lounge and both the bedrooms. We particularly liked sitting out the front in the morning with a cup of tea, looking at the lake, whilst the dog was free to just wander the grounds. It was a great place for walkers, with tracks up to Amble, Windermere and Troutbeck. The roads uphill to the house were a little bit challenging for my sister's small car, but we did manage to find easier routes with less sharp turns. The mortal man pub was a nice friendly place to stop in the evening on the way back, reasonably priced food, and the dog always got a little treat. All in all, a lovely little break away, in a secluded place, where the only people you see are hikers, but only a few minutes by car to Amble and Windermere. Comfortable, clean apartment, perfect for us and would recommend to others.
Javier
Excellent peaceful location with views to Windermere lake, easy access to both ... Excellent peaceful location with views to Windermere lake, easy access to both Windermere and Ambleside villages, you could walk to Wansfell Pike from the farm with impressive views of Windermere lake and easy walk to Troutbeck, our dog had the best holiday he could have dreamt of
Lovely location with great view of Windemere. Spacious rooms, everything we needed in one place was great!
Anna Christine
It was very homely and comfortable and the owners were very kind and helpful. The accommodation is in a beautiful place with easy access to all the places you would be likely to want to visit. Dog walking was easy as you could walk straight from the house into beautiful woods and fields. My only comment rather than a complaint is that I wish owners of holiday accommodation would put in a decent size fridge. If you are self catering you will want somewhere to keep food. Not everyone can afford to eat out all the time. A decent size fridge that would hold enough food is necessary. A washing machine would be nice but not totally necessary if you are only away for a week.
We marked down slightly on facilities as we felt that the bathroom, whilst adequate, would have benefitted from an update loo was difficult to flush and poor flow on the shower. That said, we really liked the property, the beds were comfy and the loungedining area with those wonderful views was fantastic.
The accommodation was brilliant, we really enjoyed our stay here and the views are amazing!
Phillip
I took my Partner and Mother with me, my partner had never been to the Lakes before and my mother needed a holiday. The views as we made our way to Skelghyll took her breath away and when we reached Low Skelghyll, she was speech bound. The views from the house are amazing. The house itself was all that I expected, roomy, clean and truly home from home. Some people may find the lane a bit daunting but let me assure you, it is worth the drive. If you want a quiet holiday in easy reach of the attractions the Lakes has to offer, then Skelghyll is your place. I cannot praise the house and location enough. You have to go yourself and see.
Judith
We had a great week despite the rain showers. Low Skelgill was in a really great location despite the narrow access lanepart of the fun it was very clean and comfortable with a very spacious sitting room with amazing views. The owner was very helpful. We would certainly use it again.
