Gavel Cottage Reviews

We've stayed at a number of Sykes cottages and this was definitely our favourite so far. The cottage was perfect and the location was excellent, being just on the outskirts of Bowness and a 15 minute walk to the centre. Highly recommended cottage, and the service from Sykes was top notch, as ever. Thank you Mark & Gillian
Located close to town yet unbelievably quiet and peaceful Gavel cottage was perfection for us. Very clean with a well equipped kitchen, spacious lounge and dining areas. We used the open fire occasionally, it was perfect for relaxing in front of. Large bathroom and super comfortable bed. We spent lots of time in the large private garden which we shared with visiting grouse and ducks. One of our best stays in the Lakes, topped off with glorious weather was a bonus.

Extremely lovely cottage just outside Bowness. About 1.5 miles away from centre, easily walkable but I would recommend taking a torch in the later months as there is not much street lighting. Handy having a dedicated parking spot. This cottage has all you need, well equipped kitchen, good bathroom and a decent size. There is a very large garden with a summerhouse, pity the weather was miserable so we didn't get the to use it. 1The only thing I felt let it down to some degree was that one of the sofas was well past it's best. Cushioning was very saggy making it not particularly comfortable and quite low as a result. Found it difficult to get up from. Would certainly book this again if we return to the area any time
Fantastic week away. Lovely cottage and great location. Very cosy and super shower and bath.
Beautiful cottage in very tranquil location. The garden was absolutely stunning and so well kept. Kitchen had everything you could possibly need, and loved the throws in the lounge! Fire was all ready to light, which was great! Would definitely book again!

Had a lovely week and Bowness was brilliant.
A lovely comfortable cottage in a quiet location.
This is an excellent cosy cottage perfectly located just to south of Bowness centre and ideally placed for walking, sailing and visiting south Lakes region. Garden is private and well equipped for eating outside in sunshine. Cottage itself is well equipped for winter or summer stay. Highly recommended.
Property is well positioned, spacious and the garden is superb. Our 3rd stay which says a lot about whats on offer. Makes a wonderful base for exploring the Lakes and we particularly liked the fact we could securely store our electric bikes. Unfortunately access to the spa swimming at the local hotel is no longer included which was a big bonus in our case as we generally holiday out with the summer season. The bathroom carpet would benefit from renewal as it is stained. The runner downstairs also moves around quite a bit and could be regarded as somewhat of a trip hazard, it is needed to prevent soiling of the carpet on entering the area but perhaps woodenlaminate flooring to that area would be a better option. On the whole a lovely property that provides excellent value for money and a peaceful retreat

A really enjoyable stay and a great holiday. The cottage was excellent and we loved the lake district and all the activities. You need to remove the bit about burnside hotel on the pic though as we wanted to go swimming at the hotel but this was no longer available. Thx.
Super time away with my 3 sons. We had great weather and the cottage at this time of the year had the benefit of the full bloom of surrounding flowers and gardens. Facilties were great and we would definitely go back. Thank you for providing us with a lovely cottage as a base for our motorbike adventures in the Lakes.
Considering price and fact it had claimed to have had deep covid clean We feel that this cottage was nowhere near value for money. Inside cupboards were dirty and in some cases broken, cutlery in drawer was dirty, some even had remnants of food on them, we took 2 knives forks and spoons boiled them and used them for the week. Work surfaces were sticky as was dining table.Windows in living area were painted shut could not open them at all.Paintwork old tired dirty and scraped in places.Dead flies and wasp still at kitchen window, even the remote control was held together with cellotape. The garden area was ok but could do with a good tidy , seen evidence of this happening on our last day.All in all we are totally disappointed in this accomodation and would not stay there again or recommend it to our worst enemy. We have used Sykes a number of times but this has really put us off would be reluctant to do so again if this is the type of standard you could expect. We have take photographs of all our points.

Hello, The house was lovely, in a great location. A few things that the owner should know. The pass to the Lakes Hotel for the spa facilities, guests would appreciate knowing that there is no access to the hotel by car. The Can opener needs replacing it doesn't work The switches on the cooker hob work but numbers are difficult to see so it took a few days to work out The main light in the bedroom doesn't work The shower mat needs replacing Radiator in the main bedroom needs looking at sometimes on and warm other nights cold. Your email stated the owner would contact me at 4pm, prior to my arrival but didn't. Apart from the above an enjoyable stay Best wishes Louise Cartlidge
This is an excellent cosy cottage with superb private garden. Easy short walk to ferry and Bowness centre. On busy days in the Lakes this is a beautiful quiet gateway yet so close to everything and a good base to explore further afield whether by car, bus or on foot.
Elizabeth
The cottage was very comfortable and had everything you would need. Good area for visiting the Lakes. Providing slippers was a great idea and tray to leave outside shoes in. Although surrounded by houses it was really quiet and peaceful. Wouk do recommend.
2nd time at Gavel Cottage which is exactly as we remembered. Quiet and very relaxing haven but within easy reach of shops and restaurants. We took our ebikes and really enjoyed cycling around the area, especially going over on the nearby ferry to the other side of the Lake. The complimentary access to burnside spa was great. A super cottage
Fantastic cottage, really well equipped. Lovely garden . Really enjoyed our stay. A nice 20 minute stroll along the lake to Bowness and close to the ferry. I would highly recommend this cottage.
Fantastic return trip to Gavel Cottage home from home. Already rebooked for 2022! Thanks guys.
Christine
Everything was lovely roomy warm and so comfortable spacious all in all happy holiday and lots of good memories.
A beautiful cottage with more than expected cleaning facilities. Very homely and very quiet. Situated just a couple of hundred yards from lake Windermere. A perfect location. I would 100 return to this cottage, loved having an open coal fire of an evening. Very relaxing.
The cottage was lovely in a quiet location but close to amenities. It was very well equipped and comfortable a home from home. Would return to this cottage.
Very disappointing holiday, the listing for the cottage was incorrect. its advertised with wonderful gardens and outdoor areas, which we were then informed by the owners 5 days before arrival, non of these facilities were available due to COVID. I'm sorry but COVID has been going on since march and we booked in June so they basically lied in the listing to get the booking, and then the small print of a general email 5 days before a holiday stating garden and summerhouse is closed is not acceptable. Upon challenging this the owners simply refused to even open the summerhouse and let us have an outdoor table and chairs. Their attitude to customer service is appalling, and they are hiding behind COVID to probably save them money on cleaning costs at the sacrifice of customers enjoying well needed breaks. The cottage is small, the main bedroom doesn't even have a kingsize bed, just a small double, all mattresses need replacing, wallpaper is pealing, bath panels are broken, carpets are stained and covered up with poor quality mats and the kitchen and contents are far from clean and fresh..... In summary I would choose a different cottage!
Lovely cottage. Disappointed garden furniture was locked away and no access to spa due to covid 19. Would have expected reduction in fees as we paid for those extras and would have taken a cheaper cottage otherwise. Flowers and biscuits a nice touch. Kitchen well equipped and plenty of cleaning agents available. There could be a wasps nest outside bathroom window found at least half a dozen wasps in there daily EVEN THOUGH window was closed,

Weve been to this cottage before and it lived up to our expectations and more. Everything you need is provided. There is excellent heating and ample hot water. The coal fire is even laid ready for lighting on your arrival.
We had a great weekend and will be back.
Malcolm
What a fantastic cottage in a lovely location. The Cottage exceeded our expectations. it was very clean and tidy with the open fire already made. Milk and coffee had been left for us. I will be booking this place again
Great cottage packed with everything you need. We were even given some basic provisions to start us off. Would recommend this to anyone.
Gavel Cottage was a wonderful getaway cottage for us, it was clean, comfy and had everything we needed. Felt very relaxed from the moment we arrived access to the hotel swimming pool was an added bonus with having my little girl on a few rainy afternoons. We will defiantly return my only criticism was it is a little further out of Bowness than suggested in the write up but after a few days it really didnt matter. Having deer, rabbits and an abundance of birds on our doorstep was much preferred.
Elaine
Very well equipped and comfortable cottage, in a lovely peaceful setting approx 20 minutes walk into BownessonWindermere .
Lovely cottage, a bit out of Bowness but a pleasant lakeside walk into the town.
Really lovely cottage in a great location with everything you could possibly need.
We've stayed at Gavel Cottage many times and always feel it's like home from home. Love the comfort and facilities. We'll be back again next year.
Debbie
The photographs dont do Gavel Cottage justice! The cottage is cosy, without feeling cramped. Every detail is considered, including candles, a laid fire and comfy dressing gowns, making the cottage feel like home and wonderful to return to following a day of walking or exploring. We met both the housekeeper and the gardener, who were helpful, cheerful and informative. The walk into BownessonWindermere alongside the lake is flat and easy, taking about 20 minutes. For us the location was excellent,as Bowness was very busy over the Bank Holiday weekend, it was a super retreat! It was also a great location to be based at, we explored the ares from the cottage north to Keswick, south to Newby Bridge, and used the ferry to experience Coniston. Our only complaint is that we didnt have long enough to do everything we wanted so we will return, we will not hesitate to book Gavel Cottage again!
It was excellent and was home to home.
The cottage was a gem it had everything which was needed to make a great holiday, lovely location, quiet, fantastic garden and summer house. We will be booking again and hopefully soon.
Great Cottage But think you need to revise your walking time into Bowness more ... Great Cottage But think you need to revise your walking time into Bowness more like 25mins , walked in first night there, got a taxi back 4 fixed rate so used taxis after that
Daniel
Great place to stay, 2 minutes south of the amenities of Windermere, the pass for the spa is great also. It is set in a lovely location away from noise and distractions but so close to walks etc. The cottage itself is lovely, well set out, great facilities and kitchen, warm and cosy with rooms that are spacious and comfortable. Plus the best bit for us was the little ones enjoying a real fire to relax in front off surrounded by cosy rugs and the Christmas decorations! Too improve it more, it could have a cot and highchair to cater for babies, but other than that, its a great little place.
Stacey
This has to be the nicest self catering cottage we've ever stayed in! Beautifully decorated and furnished. The attention to detail is fabulous and we had everything we needed and more. We will definitely return
Graham
Gavel cottage lacks for nothing. Everything you could wish for is provided. Even the fire was laid ready for lighting when we arrived. I cannot think of anything that could have been done better. Well done and thank you.
Gorgeous cottage, enjoyed the open plan living downstairs and comfortable beds. More spacious than the pictures showed. Good location for exploring southern lakes, highlight was gardens and NT house at Troutbeck.
