South Stonethwaite Cottage Reviews

Lovely cottage, great location and two good pubs within walking distance. No shops nearby but we knew that so shopped as we toured around the Lakes. Thoroughly enjoyed everything and many thanks to the owners for keeping such high standards.

This house is an excellent cottage. Cosy open fire and good heating, well equipped and perfectly located. Stayed with my son for a week of walking and outdoor activiites. Perfect.
Beautiful cottage, warm, super quiet, huge extra kingsize two singles bed, lovely fire, well equipped kitchen with everything we needed. Would stay again. Thanks!
Katherine
Lovely cottage in a great location, sympathetically modernised, with a cosy living room and bright, airy kitchen, wellequipped with plenty of crockerycutlery. The position and design of the kitchen, including table and chairs, makes the most of the beautiful view over the valley. Very quiet and peaceful. Comfy bed. Good shower. Wed happily return.
Grateful thanks and hope to be back

Shower leaking and mouldy. Clearly poorly fitted in first place and is now starting to show this. Fitter has used MDF around the bath which is now swelling each time it gets wet. Key box on exterior would not open despite repeated trials of the same code. Tried calling the agents when we couldnt get in, but could only leave answer machine message and await their call back. We missed the agents return call due to poor signal, but were disappointed to see that they made no further attempts to call us back, instead only leaving a voice message instructing us to call the original answer machine phone number. Eventually opened, but not the best first impressions of the house andor agents. Kitchen door is leaking in rain as it has only been primer coated on the outside. A shame as its clearly not a cheap door. Alongside the other issues, it shows that ongoing maintenance isnt taking place. House inventory doesnt match whats in the house and clearly isnt being checked andor replaced. Blind in smaller bedroom does not fully pull up. This should be obvious to cleaning staff when theyd cleaned the house. Pair of childrens gloves found in shoe rack, alongside part eaten food from previous occupants in the freezer, suggests further that this house is not properly checkedcleaned after each let.

A second visit to this lovely cottage, which benefits from very comfortable beds, a powerful shower, a wellequipped kitchen, and a truly stunning location. It is a peaceful haven, but with the benefit of a pub just a 2 minute stroll away. When the weather is fine as it was for our week's stay, the garden is a lovely suntrap too.
Having stayed in many self catering cottage's, its fair to say that south Stonethwaite is up there amongst the best. A beautiful front garden greets you, with easy parking. The welcome pack had delicious products. The extension has great light and views. The master bedroom has a glorious bed and is very spacious. We did not have to use the fire place as the weather was stunning and the property is very warm. We especially enjoyed leaving the car behind and being able to walk from the property and up the stunning Troutbeck valley. The Tongue was a nice walk, as was the high path past the slate mines and up and over to High Street. The only thing missing was a baking tray.

Lovely property, well equipped, nice location
This is a truly delightful cottage with excellent equipment and facilities. The extra wide double bed was extremely comfortable. The view from the kitchen over the Troutbeck valley is magnificent and the setting in the the tranquil Town End hamlet is the Lake District at its very best. There are varied walks from the cottage door. The welcome basket contained wine, eggs, milk, mince pies and biscuits, jam and tea bags by far the most generous we have ever received and particularly welcome as we arrived on a Sunday Another particularly special feature is the extensive library of interesting books.
Lovely comfortable cottage set in a tiny hamlet close to Troutbeck. Private parking is tight and I would recommend reversing in through the gate. We found a very well stocked kitchen, lovely welcome pack thank you and the beds were very comfortable. We had the pleasure, in our opinion, of being snowed in one day, so lit the fire and cosied up. This made our holiday even better. The WiFi is strong and we had no issues. A nice place to relax after days out in the lakes and we were sorry to leave. I would suggest a couple of extra tea towels, trivial I know but apart from that, thank you for the stay x
Lovely little cottage where we were made to feel really welcome. Super views and location good for pubs and the old post office cafe.
Lovely stay, excellent cottage, gorgeous surroundings. Welcome tray nice touch. Just need a strong beamed hand torchheadtorch for going to the car in the dark.

Lovely character cottage in a historic village. Located conveniently for walks from the doorstep. Comfortable and cosy. Thank you.
Lovely tidy and comfortable cottage in a beautiful area with good walks nearby. We were disappointed after reading the visitor book that people had complimented the welcome tray however our tray only had a few coffee pods and a couple of teabags in the bottom of a tin. No milk or sugar was provided and as there is no shop in the village, after driving for over 4 hours to get here we had to go into Windermere for supplies. There was no extra toilet paper so the little that was left on the roll for us had ran out, as did the kitchen paper. Not sure if this was an oversight or because it wasn't a full week stay we had booked. Would happily return to this wee cottage.
Highly recommended, very clean, well equipped, very comfortable bedsbedding. Very quiet, with lovely views and walks. Great base to explore Windermere and the wider area. Queens Head pub highly recommended for meals.
We had a wonderful time, with amazing views both from the window of our kitchen and bedroom, and from the garden. The house is very comfortable and well equipped, and it is as described in the advertisements. There are nice walks around the property. Our privacy was respected at all times. We have great memories from our stay at this property.
Amanda
A picture perfect cottage in a very peaceful location. Cottage was very well equipped and comfortable for two, private parking very welcome and the Queens Head pub within easy walking a definite bonus. There were some stunning walks direct from the cottage, would recommend and would certainly stay again. One small note the towels could do with an upgrade, other than that perfect.
Lovely property. Excellently prepared for cooking. Comfortable and cosy!
Having stayed at South Stonethwaite Cottage a couple of times previously it was lovely to come back and spend another week in your lovely cottage. The views from the kitchen never disappoint and the walk to The Queens pub is a great added bonus. Just a couple of points to raise, we couldnt find any pint glasses and the blind in the bathroom and the main bedroom could do with replacing. Just minor things and wouldnt deter us from stopping in the cottage again. Really comfortable stay and thank you for the treats they were very much appreciated and a lovely touch. See you again soon.
Christine
Absolutely fabulous thank you, perfect location, views over fells wonderfull ! Welcome pack unexpected but a lovely surprise. My daughters had a well deserved break from very stressful jobs I was along for the ride! Ha ha. Hopefully see you this time next year.
A lovely holiday cottage in a beautiful part of the Lakes. A very generous welcome pack on arrival. An excellent holiday!
Jeremy
Perfect cottage in beautiful surroundings. Great location for exploring the Windermere area.
A lovely, comfortable and well equipped cottage with great views. We also loved the pretty village of Troutbeck and being able to do great hikes from the front door and walk to the pubs. The only downside was that the cottage didnt get quite warm enough despite boosting the temperature. The radiators didnt come on at all in the mornings. The ambient temperature needs to be set a little higher. Other than that we had a great stay and appreciated the Welcome goodies.
My daughter and I loved the cottage and the area, such a warm welcoming and beautiful old cottage in a wonderful setting. . We couldn't fault it at all
Kathryn
What a beautiful cottage, traditional yet with all facilities, very comfortable. Fabulous view! We really enjoyed our stay, thank you. Also many thanks for the thoughtful welcome tray. x
Excellent cottage in Troutbeck we really enjoyed our stay, one of the best we have stayed in.
Lovely comfortable cottage nestled in the valley with beautiful views at the rear to the Yoke Ill Bell ridge. Tasteful decoration with good quality finishes and furniture. Kitchen is very well equipped. Bed in main bedroom is enormous and extremely comfortable. Only comment would be that a 13.5 tog duvet was very warm in a sunny week! Short walk to excellent pub and a great position for wide variety of walks including from the door. The parking is not straightforward. Yes, there is parking for two cars but of not more than medium size. Your have to reverse in from a narrow lane and the entrance to the parking area is narrowed by stone walls on either side. Other than that, highly recommended. A lovely week.
Lovely cottage but quite difficult to find which one it was in the 'village' . .... it needs a sign ON THE GATE or adjacent wall as it is VERY difficult to get off the VERY narrow lane into the property. Multi manoevres are required to get inout of the steepish 'driveway'. 2017 visitors book also commented about this. Also, it really should be advised that it is NOT suitable to park 2 cars there .... unless they are small or you book your car in for 'scrape' repairs in advance ! Other than that the cottage is a gem of a place with everything you want provided a couple of throws for the cold leather suite would be nice, as would a 4slot toaster, and a couple of fan heaters if its cold as the heatsource radiators don't really get warm at all and the single convector heater is not sufficient. Apart from those few gripes don't let them put you off booking this cottage..... it's great and in a good location for exploring the area.
Deborah
This is a lovely cottage, tastefully furnished and very comfortable, in a cracking location. It's quiet and peaceful, with superb walks high or low level from the door, plus the option to take the bus further afield. There is a brilliant pub the Queen's Head just a 2 minute walk away. The parking area is a little tricky to access and is tight for 2 cars, but it would be fine for just one vehicle. We would be very happy to stay here again and would definitely recommend it to others.
Nice cosy cottage for 3 located close to a very nice pub. There are plenty of walks from the cottage which makes its location ideal. The cottage was well equipped, clean and tidy. Nice comfortable beds and lovely views from the kitchen. Would definitely stay again.
The heating really struggles when the outside temperature is low, we would of been cold if it was not for the log fire and the 2 electric heaters supplied in the cottage.
Very much enjoyed our stay even though the weather was very wet. Location and views from the back of the cottage great. Loved the main bedroom, but bathroom could do with a bit of work doing. Kitchen good and was easy to use, but a few things not clean on the work tops. A few maintenance issues and also lost internet connection half way through stay. It would not reset. Good walking from the door. Appreciated the welcome pack with delicious bread and cakes, Thank you.
The location was great. The equipment and facilities within the property were great, as was the welcome pack everything you would need was there. The only issue was the heating, which is ground source and is supposed to provide a constant temperature. The radiators only just got warm at the top and either need bleeding or the system is ineffective. With drafts from under the door, we had to use the coallog fire every day, which cost a few pounds and was a shame
Patricia
Wonderful Views! Lovely well appointed cottage with superb views. Beds were comfortable and the cottage was really clean and warm on our arrival. The owners had provided everything you could need to make the start of your holiday stress free, together with an exceptional welcome pack which was much appreciated after our long journey. We had such a restful holiday and will certainly return in the near future.
Andrew
Lovely cottage, well presented and in a great location. Welcome pack of bread, milk and butter most appreciated, and the wine was great! The sign for the cottage could do with some lighting, we arrived in the dark and had difficulty locating the right one.
Lovely cottage. Great views. Peaceful.
Everything apart from the nonfunctional internet was fab
