Applethwaite Cottage Reviews

A real gem of a property in a lovely area. Tastefully decorated with all the modern up to date conveniences but still retaining its cottage charm. The beds are really comfortable, and the stylish soft furnishings made this an excellent place to stay. We will certainly return in the future.

We stayed four nights in this lovely little cottage which is in a fantastic location close to multiple walking trails ranging from easy to more difficult, and only 510 minutes drive from Windermere. Fabulous views down the valley from both the cottage and the small garden seating area, and we couldn't tear ourselves from away watching sunrise and sunset each day as the hills changed colour. We were incredibly lucky with the weather. Very well equipped kitchen with all the necessary utensils, dishes, baking dishes, coffee pod machine etc, and even a roll of baking foil and cling film. Good quality towels, bedding and soft furnishings. We really appreciated that the cottage had been decorated tastefully for Christmas we were there 2327 Dec, and were grateful for the welcome pack a nice touch. Only two very minor things we feel could be improved 1 The sofa is comfortable at first but not terribly supportive. Neither of us have back issues but did find we were a little achy after sitting on the couch for a couple of hours. 2 A heated towel rail is simply not adequate to heat the main bathroom in winter, in a chilly place like The Lake District! We have struck this before, in other places it's a modern shortcut. We had to leave the door ajar so that the warmth from the sitting room below would somewhat take the chill off the air, otherwise every time we opened the door we'd be hit with an arctic blast and then there would be shrieks as one placed one's posterior on the icy toilet seat! I should mention that the small ensuite in the main bedroom does have a high mounted fan heater, given it does not have a heated towel rail. Perhaps one could be installed in the main bathroom too. Overall, though we wanted to stay longer! Thank you, and we look forward to returning.
Applethwaite was gorgeous. Lovely location to walk from door and good pubs, and property really cosy. Looks like has been renovated fairly recently so also very fresh and clean. Small but perfectly formed and ideal for us family of 4. Thank you
Justin
Lovely cottage. Only comment we would say, is please put some padding on the beam at the top of the stairs. My head is now a different shape to before the holiday!
Great property and well furnished and well equipped! Great walks from doorstep and good pub in village
Cottage was lovely, great location, only complaint was the bedroom no 2 was cramped

This cottage is beautiful, top quality furniture and very well equipped kitchen , lovely bedroom quality sheets and towels. The thing I have to say is that the two electric heaters in the open plan areas downstairs are not sufficient for the property without the wood burner being lit in the winter months. Also one is behind the sofa so blocking the heat.some blinds would be welcome in the porch area, for privacy especially on dark evenings. Over all we have had a lovely week. Thankyou.

We had a great stay thank you. There were quite a few cobwebs in the bedrooms behind the bed head and a few USB plug sockets would be helpful to charge phones, pads, etc. overall, a wonderful stay.
Everything was lovely. Location, nice and remote yet close enough to Windermere and Ambleside if you needed more hussle bussle. Cottage was lovely, clean and comfortable including well equipped kitchen, bathroom and WiFi and smart to.
Delightful location and cottage that completely met our expectations and needs. Well equipped and comfotable furnished.

We have just returned from a 10 night stay at this gem of a cottage. It is in the small village of Troutbeck we had lovely views of the hills and a really nice garden to sit in. We watched the local sheep farmer drive his sheep up the lane twice while we were there to new pasture the baby lambs were a wonderful sight. The cottage was spotlessly clean very well equipped our friend had the bedroom with the bathroom next door and we had the en suite room the beds were so comfortable. car parking space good with gate to close off the road. You must be very picky if you find fault with this property and if and when we return to the lakes with our friend we would stay here again. very well situated for Windemere Ambleside and Bowness but also good for getting out and about to lots of places. one of the best cottages we have had Thank You to the owners.
Although it was not listed as being provided, a basket of kindling and logs upon arrival included in the cost of the cottage would have been extremely welcomed. Upon arrival at 4pm, the cottage was COLD and the only heating available downstairs was two electric heaters which were insufficient to heat the home that first night. Seems like another cottage which has gone up significantly since Covid while cutting back on some basic comforts. Shame

A lovely cosy cottage which was ideal for family to stay in whilst we all got together for Christmas in the village. Easy walk to the local and good walking from the front door when it stopped raining!
All as expected in general. Welcome pack was disappointing only because there was a single packet of biscuits which were broken and only one chocolate sachet for a cottage for four. No fresh milk. However, the tea bags were very welcome as Id forgotten mine. Hunted around for a welcome note which was eventually found in the middle of a concertina file with instructions on the appliances. Could have been a little more friendly and signed by actual names instead of the owners. Apart from these trivialities which were more poignant after a nightmare on the M6, a 200 mile journey and a horrible stressful week at work. A fabulous cottage with a beautiful outlook of the fells. Quiet and isolated. Ideal for walkers. No public buses on this little road which we found out for ourselves. We had a good car so not an issue. Glad I used initiative to bring my own shower mats for safety. Talking of safety, not that I would have used them, but two cast iron casserole pans were located on the top shelf which would have been impossible to handle and reach without steps available in the cupboard. All the usual kitchen equipment was plentiful. Make sure you book a table at the Queens Head in advance of your arrival if youre planning on going out for a local hot meal when you get there after driving 200 miles, as me and my 86 year old mother were refused a table for two at five thirty pm as it would have been full by six according to the landlady. Fair enough. Booked for Sunday lunch which didnt disappoint. Super comfortable cottage and beautifully decorated and furnished.
We had a wonderful week in Applethwaite cottage, brilliant walks from your front door. Great tea room just up the road. The cottage was very well decorated and cosy, we will definitely stay here again. Only negative if there was one of the neighbours parked just outside the gate, which with the entrance being a bit tricky made it more difficult. So possible a no parking sign there may help. There was ample free parking with in the drive so didn't see the need for that.
Had a lovely stay in Applethwaite cottage. Cottage was clean, well equipped and the location was beautiful with lovely views over the rolling hills. We loved the area and there were so many things to do within 30 mins drive. Loved it so much we will definitely return in the future. Thanks.

We left feeling very positive about our stay at Applethwaite Cottage and have already recommended to our family. Only issue we had was the waste. The majority of what we generated was recycling which all ended up in the landfill bin. We couldn't find any recycling bins at the cottage but we saw them all down the street which didn't make sense. If there were instructions regarding this then we missed them and we apologise.
Andrew
Beautifully presented cottage with everything you need and more to make your holiday perfect. The view from the garden was amazing and the location perfect! We highly recommend this cottage for a small family or a couple. We have no negative feedback at all
A lovely cottage in a beautiful location. The cottage had everything we needed. We would definitely return and recommend to family and friends.
A lovely cottage, with a warm and cosy feel to it. Also lots of cooking utensils and beautifully decorated.
Property as described. Clean and comfortable Excellent location splendid views from property and well placed for exploring surrounding area. Plan to return next year.
This was easily the best holiday rental cottage I've stayed in. The standard of fittings and furnishings was of the highest quality. It was warm and comfortable and in an excellent location. I have previously stayed at this property many times some 40 years ago and the current owners have certainly put considerable effort into making it and enjoyable experience for visitors. I have no negatives to report at all.

Noise from drystone walking was not a problem luckily. Neither was traffic a problem considering how close we were to the road. Peaceful location. More worktop space needed in kitchen catering for family of 4 even though we dined out occasionally. Twin beds in second bedroom would have been better than a double. Higher powered showers would have also been nice and second TV in bedroom with ensuite. Otherwise location idyllic and closeness to Mortal Man a bonus.
Gordon
Very pleased with the property. Would have liked shelving in ensuite for toiletries. Drain plugs needed cleaned, other peoples hair in them. Parking tight if normal or large car, not helped by another cottage using 2 cars and 2 spaces. Fortunately it worked out okay
William
Lovely cottage with lots of walks from door didn't yous car for the week
Ideally situated in a super little village with easy access to the surrounding delightful countryside and places to eat. The cottage was perfect for our needs and would suit those seeking a quality break. Everything was top class.
We had a lovely week at this cottage , the views are outstanding ,everything you ... We had a lovely week at this cottage , the views are outstanding ,everything you could possibly need is at the cottage , cant wait to come back again
We have had a great stay in the cottage. It is in an excellent location with plenty of walks on the doorstep. The cottage in beautiful, very happy here. Think I could happily retire here. We loved having the log burner on in the evenings, even though it was August! Loved the new garden with a perfect view.
Had a wonderful week in a beautiful cottage you have thought of everything. Excellent location, beautiful walks and scenery. Thank you will definitely be back.
A lovely cosy little cottage perfect for four of us to have a family break away. Very accessible for one of our party taking part in the great north swim and lots of lovely walks of the surrounding area from the house. Beautiful views and a very cosy fire! Would love to visit again!
We have had a lovely stay in Applethwiate Cottage. It is a great location for doing long walks. We have enjoyed the log burner and it has been on almost every night. We hope to come back soon. thank you.
As we approached Applethwaite Cottage we knew we were in for a treat. It didn't disappoint. What a gem, just what we needed to relax and unwind. What a view too! It really felt like home with all the mod cons and tasteful interior. Great walks or relaxing in front of the log burner. We'e had a great time and will definitely be coming back.
I would like to say how much we enjoyed not only the amazing location but the high standard in which we found the cottage everything was fabulous from the furnishings and bathrooms spotless even had wi fi so we could stay in touch if we needed. It's perfect for 4 people in a central location for Ambleside and Windemere and we were also able to find a few walks locally without the need to drive a welcome relief on a bank holiday ...We could also walk to 2 great local pubs for food and a well earned drink so we didn't mess up the kitchen too much and with the weather even managed to have breakfast outside for 2 mornings with a great view of the valley opposite. I just wish we could always book the cottage and the weather!
