Is Walkers Rest Right For You?

Discover why this cottage is ideal for different types of visitors

For Families
The property offers a ground floor bedroom and family bathroom on the first floor with a large rain head shower. A highchair is available for younger children. The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction sits 2 miles away. Lake Windermere provides boat trips and water activities. However, the three-storey layout with uneven stairs requires supervision for young children.
For Couples
This townhouse may not be the most romantic choice for couples. The property sleeps six and is designed for families or groups rather than intimate getaways. The three-storey layout and lack of features like a hot tub make it less suitable for romantic breaks. Couples would find better options elsewhere in the Lake District.
Pet Friendly
Walkers Rest welcomes up to two dogs. The property has a private paved courtyard with patio furniture. Lake Windermere sits 20 minutes' walk away and Orrest Head is 1.2 miles away for dog walks. However, the courtyard is paved rather than grassed which some dogs may find less suitable. The location provides good access to Lake District walking routes.

Walkers Rest Reviews

Sandra
We had a great few days staying at Walkers Rest, it had everything we needed for our stay, lovely comfy beds, quirky accommodation over 3 floors, steep stairs which were no problem to us but might be to people with health issues. We were able to park our Volvo out back but we reversed down lane, not much space if other cars parked. The internet was not great, kept buffering but even with that thoroughly enjoyed our break.
There were several light bulbs that didnt work. The property was a beautiful place to stay.
Yvonne
Not suitable at all for us. We had a slightly disabled lady who lived in kitchen as there is where there was a toilet on same level. Garden a disgrace for us and unsuitable for dogs who need grass. Parking was a nightmare. To find it was a nightmare.
Angela
Fantastically situated in windermere great cottage would definitely stay again
We were aware that is was an typical english townhouse, but we dont know that the upper bathroom was so small and the second was in the basement next to the kitchen. Our first impression was the unkempt entrance and the musty smell in the kitchen. But the worst impressiowe n was the dirty terrace with leaves and moss and and dirty sitting area. We the companyand and although it was told that somebody should clean the terrace, nobody did it during the time we lived there. There were also no items with which we could have cleaned the yard ourselves. This was very disappointing !
When we arrived the property was extremely cold which we put down to it not being let in the previous weeks. I misread the description & thought there was a bathroom on each floor of the bedrooms but as I was sleeping in the bedroom on the middle floor I either had to go up or downstairs to use the toilet in the night. The property is ideally situated a minutes walk from Windermere & with a frequent bus service other parts of the Lake District are easily accessible. The kitchen is very well equpped if you are planning on eating in. As others have said, an information folder would have been good. There are no toiletries not even a bar of soap so you need to take your own & the handles for both external doors are incredibly stiff to lock & unlock.
Great house and great location. Had a disappointing start to the holiday as the place had not been cleaned or made ready since the last occupants had left. so had to call the helpline number, cleaner arrived after about an hour and we left them to it and was all good there after. Bin at the front gate was overflowing when we arrived and we had to walk past every day until the bin lorry came, rubbish was blowing about the street and we think this annoyed the neighbours as well as ourselves with the constant picking up, also bin lorry would only take what was in the bin so when this was emptied it was quickly full again with the bags left at the side. Apart from that the cottage is a great wee traditional lake district cottage.
Where do I start ? The accommodation was absolutely perfect for our needs. We were three mountain bikers and stayed for two nights. the weather as great one day and awful the next. By having a yard out the back of the property we could wash the mud off our bikes. we were allowed to put a large sheet of plastic down in the house to keep the house clean from the bikes. The shower was lovely and warm which was needed after riding for 7 hours and 5 hours. The beds were a good size and clean and comfortable. the kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and wanted for nothing. The only thing wrong was the extract fan was falling apart and sounded like it had birds in it but that does not detract in the slightest what a great venue it it. Its near the pubs and restaurants, you have parking for 1 car and can park others near by. Its a credit to the owners and we will definitely return next year. Would I change anything ? No not at all. I might defrost the ice box .
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Walker's Rest. It is located in a quiet road, but very close to lots of amenities, including Booth's supermarket although further from the lake than we had anticipated. The house was clean, comfortable and had almost everything we needed. As some others have mentioned, there is no folder of instructions, but we worked out the WiFi, heating etc anyway, but there was no information about recycling. We ended up taking ours to the big bins in the closest car park. The two things we do want to mention are the back door which desperately needs looking at by a locksmith as it is temperamental to say the least. The other is the parking... we got into the space initially and then got blocked in for three days. We ended up buying a 7 day ticket from the local carpark twice... an unexpected extra cost. Once out, we couldnt have got back in again due to other holidaymakers parking huge cars at the adjacent cottages and blocking our space. Having said that, we had a great holiday and we are looking forward to returning to the Lake District!

Comfortable enough stay and very quiet location. Really needs doing up and bringing up to date. 3 light bulbs not working something u dont expect to go shopping for whilst on holiday. All doors very stiff to open and you need arms like Popeye to open and close. T.v doesnt work in kitchen to add. Also some outdoor lighting wouldve been nice as normal two were there but didnt work surprise surprise.
We stayed 3 nights and couldnt have been happier with the cottage. Very high standard of cleanliness and equipped with everything you could possibly need for a weekend away. The cottage layout is beautiful and the beds were so comfortable we took a picture and have purchased the same bed and mattress as in the master bedroom. Will be booking again in the near future.
Richard
Lovely, very peaceful.
Michael
Nice cottage great kitchen rooms comfortable, stairs to the kitchen diner a little steep with v low hand rail. In a great location, close to the centre shops, pubs and takeaways. Good walks from the location and short car journeys to many others. One failing, there was no local information in the cottage, many others I've stayed at keep a folder with such info, nothing at this location
Property very clean Kitchen well equipped We didnt realise it was a 3 storey house so you had to go downstairs for the kitchen and bathroom and another set of stairs for further 2 bedrooms and shower room. This wasnt a problem for us but it would have been if we had taken our parents with us as not particularly suitable for elderly or disabled. The house is very conveniently situated for the town only few minutes walk to pubs, restaurants and shops. Overall we had a lovely time.
Claire
This place was fantastic and suited all our needs, we loved the location, perfect actually. The house was fab with so much room , we would strongly recommend it to all our friends and family and really will be booking again . The booking was easy and straight forward, you were all very professional and helpful at Sykes. Thank you and we will see yous again for sure xx
Richard
We had a great week away, cottage very quirky but lots of steep stairs which is not great if you have any slight mobility issues, one double bed was comfy, the other one at the top of the house not comfy could do with a firmer mattress, ended up sleeping in twin room bed as this was comfier. Good location for all shops, restaurants and pubs, no large supermarket though so prices very high in the smaller shops.
This property in in the heart of Windermere. Great access to all the shops and restaurants. Buses are regular so once the car was parked we didn't use it again until we left, easier than trying to park in the surrounding areas and cheaper too.
Philip
Super clean, beds really comfortable and perfect location.
Large and spacious property on 3 levels. Decent kitchen although lacking in wooden spoons spatulas. Heating system either on or off as non of radiator valves worked so difficult to regulate room temperatures. Great location for shops, pubs etc and essential parking space for one car if a little tight. Would recommend this property.
The information booklets were in an upstairs wardrobe to have been left on the dining table or kitchen unit would have been a better and easier location to have found them. We had to ring up about getting into WiFi which was located on the back of the monitor. Clearer instruction on where to find the code and password would have been helpful. Perhaps we are just getting older!! We were also a little confused as to how to work the central heating system and all we needed to do was increase the temperature on the white disk in the dining area on the dresser. Otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed our week there.
The property was located in very close proximity to the Main Street in Windermere just literally a minute or less away! But it was so quiet you couldnt hear a thing! The property had a small courtyard with a wooden bench private not closed off completely for our dogs though, there was a flight of concrete steps leading up to the main door so we had to keep an eye on our two pups in case they escaped! But none the less perfect for us! The property was very well equipped with everything you could think of in the kitchen! The beds were VERY large & VERY comfy! I would say that the property had been updated and modernised from some of the old reviews I had read in previous years! You could park one car at the rear of the property but we managed to reverse our Vauxhall Vivaro campervan into the space by the back gate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Charlotte
Very well situated. Clean and comfortable cottage. Would visit again!
Walkers Rest is ideally situated in Windermere just 100 meters for local shops and restaurants. The house is very comfortable and spacious with 3 good bedrooms and a large downstairs kitchen diner. There is modern heating and plentiful hot water but just one shower, and another bathroom with shower mixer tap. Modern TV and solid walls makes it a very good let. Parking for one car at the rear but it's a tight squeeze and you really need to reverse into the space. There is plenty of free parking on Broad Street and around there too if you choose and an early bird 1 parking scheme in the car park on broad street.
The cottage was in an ideal location and was probably the main selling point, less than 1 minute walk to the high street. It has good facilities especially in the kitchen, it just lacks some TLC and a cosy feel. That said because of the location we had a great holiday being able to pop out to the town as and when required.
As is often the case, the much of the lighting was underpowered, especially in the bathrooms and kitchen. A few good quality LED bulbs would sort that out. Also, a lack of mirrors over the bathroom sinks caused a few problems. The boiler could also do with a thermostat. Having to alter the boiler and then all the valves was a faff you can do without on a break.

Our only problem was with the parking it's very misleading in as much its not feasible to use the parking space because it blocks opposites properties and neighboring properties it would be much better to give a residents parking permit for one car instead other than that it was spot on thank you kind regards
Cottage really spacious for a family of 4 including 2 teenagers and a large dog. Great location with everything you need right on your doorstep. Property might benefit from an extra seating area on the ground floor, there is certainly enough space for one. Would definitely return.
The location was perfect. The cottage was clean and warm but had many issues which I discussed with the lovely Zoe on returning the keys.
This house in a street of self catering houses is the ugly house of the street, rusted gate, grubby, unweeded, dirty outside, a door with broken glass in the patio area that was first mentioned in July 2018 but not rectified. In the lounge on first sitting on the sofa the throw covering it slid off to reveal a faux leather sofa that looked like it had been mauled by an animal, each day we had to pick up more faux leather that had come off The sofa. There is a parking space but we witnessed people trying to leave the yard that could not get out. If even one car does not park tight against the wall there is only pedestrian access in or out.The instructions left were for a completely different heating system that was not in this house, there was no refugerecycling info.
Great location and very clean. Perfect
The property is in a great location but desperately needs some attention. i.e. The outside is unattended with litter, leaves, moss and garden debris all around and a filthy front door . The outside light doesnt work and the front door lock needs attention as its extremely difficult to lock. Inside there is a folder on the heating system and the appliances but nothing on refuse collection or recycling, nothing on the parking, where the boiler was situated etc etc. Also the cleanliness inside was of a poor standard.
Caroline
We had an amazing stay, the cottage was in a perfect location , it was clean , plenty of towels, hot water and well heated throughout . Only thing we missed was a overhead shower in the downstairs bathroom , the hand held one was awkward and tended to spray a lot of water everywhere and the double bed upstairs creaked constantly so maybe a firmer frame and a firmer mattress , other than that we couldnt fault the cottage and would definitely book again . Many thanks for making our Christmas one of the best ever
Fabulous location for all amenities. Good sized rooms and facilities for a family group.felt like home from home and really enjoyed our stay.
We had a really great week in this cosy cottage which had everything you need, however there were a few things that need some attention. 1 The downstairs bedroom was not very good .... radiator didn't work, the room had not been cleaned properly hair on pillows and bedding and dirty carpet. 2 One of the upper sash windows in the sitting room would not close properly ... it looked like the latch had broken which resulted in the window having a gap at the top. 3 We were a bit surprised that there were no details in the cottage about refuse collection. There were no facilities for recycling, this is the first time we've stayed anywhere for years where this wasn't an option.
The cottage is in a great location however on arrival our first impressions were not great. The entrance to the cottage was shabby and the court yard was dirty and was very unkept. It was full of weeds and cobwebs and the glass in the door in the yard was broken and not child safe . Albeit the majority of the cottage was clean we had to clean the vinyl tablecloth as it had dried food left ! The kitchen was spacious and clean the stairs were uneven and you could have quite easily have slipped. The plus side was the location which was very close to pubs restaurants and about 25 minute walk to the lakes.
We had a really good time and the cottage was much closer to all the places of interest than we thought, without being in a noisy area. We would definitely recommend this cottage.
William
The walled garden area is what made us choose this accommodation, on the photos it looked really well presented but in reality it was dirty grubby and had cracked window on the joning garage door. The area had not been swept in a very long time, had weeds and cobwebs throughout. There were no brushes etc for us to clean it ourselves.
