The Old House Reviews

The Old house is actually a great place. You have to make allowances due to its great age but in general it's comfortable and has everything you need. We had a few minor niggles but the owners are approachable are easy to deal with. It could benefit from a real deep clean. It is quite dusty in certain parts of the house. But it's a great place central to all the key spots in the Lakes and we had a fantastic time.
Sharon
Beautiful historic property. Very cozy. Good, high quality kitchen and other facilities. Lovely comfortable beds with quality bedding. The parking is tight with a large car but other parking is available a short walk away. The property is on a good location for touring situated slightly outside Windermere on the way to Ambleside so easy to drive to all the main towns and lakes. The local open top bus that does the circular route around from Kendal to Grasmere also stops on the road just outside.
Rebecca
It needs a really proper deep clean, including the carpets, it feels dirty & looks tired. Some general maintenance is needed , the toilet seats are loose , the lights in the kitchen & bathroom flicker , the shower screen is covered in black mould.
We had a wonderful week in this beautiful part of the world. The cottage was lovely and very comfortable. We loved all the original features and the updates to the cottage blend perfectly. The kitchen was very well equipped. Living room very comfortable, and with a spell of rain and two teenagers we all enjoyed the smart tv features. The log fire made the evenings very cosy. The bedrooms were very comfortable. Nearby pub The Sun Inn was great very welcoming and friendly. Our Labrador loved it exploring the local area, walks and lakes and we did too. We would love to return.
This is the second time that we have stayed here. The location is great and having an enclosed garden and private parking makes everything easier. There is plenty of space and the kitchen is well stocked with everything you need when self catering. The downside is that the property would benefit from both a deep clean and a bit of TLC. Its incredibly dusty and so not suitable for anyone who suffers with allergies I dont usually suffer but had to take antihistamines for the whole week. There also seems to be an issue with the electrics in the bathroom the fan doesnt work at all, the main light switch was temperamental and several bulbs and switches thought the house were brokenmissing. Id recommend to others looking for an easy base for outdoor activities but would always add a disclaimer!

Heating not too good and we had to buy logs
We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the Old House in late March 2025. The cottage is wellequipped, with a kitchen that has everything you might need if you choose to cook. The beds are very comfortable, the bathroom features an excellent shower, and the living area is cosy, with charming old features and a lovely wood burner. The location is ideal for a week of walking or hiking in the Lake District, just outside Ambleside and close to many outstanding trails. We had a fantastic visit and would definitely book again. The only minor point to note which didnt detract from our stay is regarding waste collection. We put the general waste bin out as instructed, but it was not collected, as pickups appear to be fortnightly on Thursdays. Our stay coincided with an offweek. We didnt note any blue bins at the cottage so our recycling needed taking to local recycling centres. It would be helpful if blue bins could be provided for recycling.
Alison
Another fantastic stay at this wonderful house. Its full of character and in a perfect position to explore the lakes. The bus stop outside means you dont even have to drive. The owners are lovely and very helpful should you have any questions.
Initial problem of accessing keys was quickly resolved by maintenance team. Once inside property, boiler problem was resolved by owner via a phone call. Neither issue spoilt the lovely time we had at the Old House. We thought it was really quirky, with all the oak beams, flooring, doors and panelling. Enclosed garden ideal for our small dog Abbie. Furnishings, fittings and equipment were of very high quality. The owners have clearly made great efforts to make their guests comfortable and we would be very happy to visit again.
We had a fantastic time at the old house, what a great place for exploring the lake district! The house is beautiful, such a fabulous property with a wealth of history. It had everything we needed and more, thank you for renting out this fabulous property. Helen and Pete
It creaks, it squeaks ! ! Its wonderful !!! Wall to wall Oak panels and floors . One of the best cottages we have ever stayed in. We will be returning.
Priska
This house is all you need for a comfortable and cosy stay in Lake District! We all loved it. There is nothing that we didnt like actually. Highly recommended.
Kirsty
The old House, was full of charm, vintage furniture, dark wooden beams from old ships. The house itself had everything you needed and the kitchen was well equipped. The garden was nice and small, enough space to have a bbq with the family, relax with one of them rare sunny days in the lakes. The parking isnt amazing and it really is difficult getting 2 cars up into the parking spaces provided which it states you are able to do, without damaging your car. If you are happy to leave your car there for a week, then use the amazing buses, which is right at the bottom of the road from the cottage, as you can get everywhere on them. Overall The Old House is a prefect location to get around and see all of the lakes.
Gareth
The property is slightly unpolished but brimming with character and charm. Great location with walks from the door. Parking is not for the faint hearted if you have two cars as we did. A garden table and chairs would have been welcome, but it was enclosed and safe for our dog. Overall it was an excellent stay.
Geoffrey
The only major problem we found was the local authority rubbish bins were full and smelling when we arrived and were still unemptied 7 days later when we left the cottage. We had to make our own arrangements.
Alison
A fantastic property. Very comfortable and everything you should need. Perfect location to get around. Bus stops right outside with a great network so you dont have to drive. Owners are brilliant making sure youre ok and have everything.
Property was really unusual and in a great location. Reported a few concerns during our stay which were dealt with promptly. Great to have an enclosed garden and private parking. House was well stocked with towels, bedding, mugs etc so we didnt have to think about anything. Felt that the overall cleanliness and ongoing maintenance let it down slightly. Lots of cobwebs, dust, missing lightbulbs, dodgy light switches. We visited in April but the Christmas decorations were still up. The drain on the bath was blocked but we didnt report it as wed already reported a few things and felt like we were harassing the owners. Overall a great stay but ghe property could do with some TLC.
Antonia
This is a beautiful and comfortable house that we enjoyed staying in. You are near the road so can easily access the shop if needed but can walk from the house on the footpath more rurally. Many thanks!
Really nice old cottage nicely modernised in the kitchen and bathroom. Very cosy and well kept.

I visited this cottage in November and had the most wonderful stay. It was everything I expected and more. Trying to book again but cant find the dates. If you see this please help. Cant wait to come back.
Hendrikus
A lovely cottage with a lot of character and enough luxury.
We had a magical stay at the Old House. It is the most beautiful house, with a few quirks that add to the character of the experience. It could have been a little bit cleaner Dusty, ovens not very clean, cupboards not clean, fire full of ash. Still does not detract from a fabulous stay. We are looking forward to booking our stay for next year! Thank you so much!
